Trivia:

  • His name comes from the clan name (Ines), plus the wind god Fujin. There is also an Ines Raijin for the lightning god.
  • Ines Fujin's farm was in a poor financial situation during his racing period. Even despite winning one of the biggest races at the time, ends were not being met and led to a dark end for the owner and his shareholders.
  • Before he won the derby, there was no custom for fans to call out the jockey’s or the horse’s name when they won. But after he won, the 196,517-person crowd started shouting the name of his jockey, Eiji Nakano. This was known as the Nakano Call (Na-ka-no!).
  • 196,517 is also the highest number of attendance for any horse race ever held on earth (this match was Mejiro Ryan vs. Ines Fujin vs. White Stone). The record remains today.
  • Despite making a record at the Derby, he is a famous example of being destroyed by the race itself. By the end of the race, both Ines Fujin and Eiji Nakano were exhausted. During his winning lap, instead of walking gallantly, he made more of a trot and there were tears in his eyes.
  • After the race, he was found to have a swollen left leg, which was then diagnosed as flexor tendonitis (Bowed tendon). After spending two and a half months at a hot spring rehab centre, he tried to return to training on August 30th, 1990 but his legs were still unsteady. Thus his officials announced his retirement. Due to his official’s wishes, a retirement ceremony for Ines Fujin was not held.
